About

My name is Mireya Seymour and I am from the Chippewas of Nawash First Nation, but I currently reside in London, ON. In 2021, I felt called to start my beadworking journey, initially just wanting to teach myself how to bead brick stitch fringe earrings through YouTube tutorials. Once I had built my skills and realized beading is an art form that was going to be an ongoing passion, I created Seeds of the Moon to sell beaded earrings, which later expanded into making jewelry and accessories.

Once I recognized the oversaturation of appropriated Indigenous designs that were frequently sold online, I decided that my focus would be on designing and making Indigenous jewelry that challenges the “Indigenous-inspired" narrative, where authentic and meaningful Indigenous designs are culturally appropriated to benefit commercial and individual non-Indigenous businesses. I frequently incorporate contemporary representations of Indigenous symbols integral to our culture, such as berries, moons, flowers, and geometric designs, that are appropriate for Indigenous and non-Indigenous people to wear.

My custom designs reflect my contemporary beadwork style. While I often do flatstitch beading, I mainly specialize in brickstitch, which sparked my initial passion for beading. Each customer who purchases my handmade jewelry and accessories is receiving authentic Indigenous and Canadian-made products that you can wear proudly.

Aside from jewelry-making, I am the Coordinating Editor at Embassy Cultural House, an art collective in London, Ontario. For a comprehensive view of my education and curatorial practice, view my profile below.
